If it pleases you, My Lady I, Alex Chang Huey Wah, appear for Your Humble Petitioner, My Learned Friend Madam Natassa Zaini SFC is appearing for Chambers, I am most grateful that my learned brother Alwin Rajasurya is appearing for the Bar Council and the State Bar.
My Lady, I seek leave to say a few words to introduce Your Petitioner, ZATI HANANI BINTI ZOHARI.
The Petitioner was born on 23rd August 1993 in Kuala Lumpur and is the youngest child of Dato’ Zohari Sulaiman and Datin Zarina Abd Rahman, who are present in Court today, to witness this joyous occasion.
The Petitioner had a different idea at first on what will she be when she grows up and like most Asian parents, your career choices are either to become a doctor, engineer, lawyer or a disgrace.
Weighing up the options, the Petitioner chose to pursue law. Throughout her student days, the Petitioner has come to learn and find that what was the most intriguing about the law is the importance place it takes in the world.
Law builds civilization, protect fundamental rights, ideas and inventions. It is the development in the law and the way that it adapts to the ever changing society are the one of the many reasons which the Petitioner finds fascinating.
The Petitioner read laws in the University of the West of England where she graduated with Second Class, in the Upper Division. Thereafter, the Petitioner continued her pursuit of becoming a lawyer by enrolling into the Bar Professional Training Course in City Law School, City, University of London. The Petitioner was Called to the Bar of England and Wales in July 2018 and is a Barrister-at-Law, Lincoln’s Inn.
Upon completion of her Bar studies, the Petitioner commenced her pupillage in Messrs. Zul Rafique and Partners, under the tutelage of my learned friend Ms. Kung Suan Im.
On this beautiful day, the Petitioner would like to take this opportunity to express her heartfelt gratitude towards the people who have been in her support system.
Firstly, to her loving parents, who have been endlessly providing their unwavering support, emotionally, physically and financially. The Petitioner also wishes to thank her parents for their patience and encouragement and she strongly believes that without these two most important people in her life, she could not have achieve another milestone today.
My Lady,
To quote the Petitioner’s father, “we have four doctors, and 2 engineers, we need a lawyer in the family”. Growing up, her siblings are her role models and they have been inspiring her to pursue her dream and to never give up, at any cost. With that, the Petitioner would like to thank her siblings who have shown her the true meaning of hard work and sacrifice.
Furthermore, the Petitioner would like to show her gratitude to her pupil Mistress, Ms. Kung Suam Im for her patience, constant guidance and teachings throughout her pupillage. The Petitioner would like to point out that she is extremely grateful to be under the tutelage of such a distinguished partner at Zul Rafique and Partners. Unfortunately, Ms. Kung Suan Im is unable to attend today as she is away.
Subsequently, the Petitioner would also like to thank her colleagues at Messrs. Zul Rafique and Partners for their support and for making her pupillage a memorable experience and especially to Ms. Atilia, who has patiently provided great assistance and guidance during her pupillage.
The Petitioner would like to specially thank her fellow friends, Mr. Muzzamir Mydin, who has been a mentor to the Petitioner since her student days, guiding her through every examinations and assignments, Mr. Ezril Kamarul Hisham, for always being there for the Petitioner and making the tough times more bearable, Ms. Shahira Che Ghani, Ms. Sofia Abdul Rashid and Ms. Amalina Andri for always by the Petitioner who played important roles in law school.
Your Petitioner knows that pursuing a legal career is a tough journey. Nonetheless, Your Petitioner is determined and believe that gradually, with hustle and hard work, she will become a prominent advocate and solicitor.
To quote one of Petitioner’s favourite saying by Booker T. Washington, I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed.
With this My Lady, I verily believe that the Petitioner is a fit and proper person to be admitted and enrolled as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. I believe that the Petitioner’s papers are in order and that my learned friends from the Attorney General’s Chambers and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee respectively have no objections to this motion.
I therefore humbly pray for an order in terms.
[AFTER THE ORDER IS GRANTED BY THE COURT]I am very much obliged.
Ms. Kung Suan Im tenders her apologies for not being able to attend the admission proceedings today, I crave leave to robe Your Petitioner.
