NAME: CHAN YI ZHENG
PETITION NO.: WA-18-967-06/2018
DATE: APRIL 26, 2019, FRIDAY
COURT: Kuala Lumpur High Court Special Powers Division 2
JUDGE: Her Ladyship DATUK HAJAH AZIZAH BINTI HAJI NAWAWI
If it pleases you, My Lady, I appear for Your Humble Petitioner My Learned Friend Madam Aisyaf Falina Abdullah SFC is appearing for Chambers and for this Petition I am most grateful that Miss Dipinder Kaur will appear for the Bar for the State Bar.
Your Petitioner Chan Yi Zheng was born and raised in a small town located in Perak where you can find the Asian version of the Tower of Pisa, Teluk Intan.
Your Petitioner was born in a typical Chinese family where the children in the family are expected to be either a doctor or a lawyer or an architect. However, your Petitioner’s parents have never given this kind of pressure to your Petitioner.
Your Petitioner is the youngest child in the family, brought up by his parents, Mr. Chan Foo Keong and Madam Chew Mei Heng since 23rd August 1994. My Lady, I crave leave for Your Petitioner’s parents to be introduced.
Your Petitioner would also like to thank his grandmother, Madam Wong Ah Fong and his late grandfather, Mr. Chan Ah Kong and for their absolute love and care.
My Lady, Your Petitioner read laws at the University of Liverpool and graduated in year 2016 with Honours second class in the upper division. He then completed one of the toughest examinations known in Malaysia, the Certificate in Legal Practice in year 2017 and began his pupillage at Siew Lee & Co under the guidance of my learned friend, his pupil mistress, Madam Shirley Loh Siew Lee.
My Lady, A quick note on his days in Liverpool, Your Petitioner and I share the same sentiment about football… I hope I will not offend any fellow friends at the bar. I personally cannot understand why 22 men have to chase one ball… we should just let them have ONE ball each.
During his pupillage, your Petitioner was given plenty of opportunities to explore various practice areas within the firm, including but not limited to conveyancing, corporate and commercial law and civil litigation.
Your Petitioner has a confession to make that he used to think that the conveyancing files were easy to handle until he handled one on his own, it was a total disaster to him. Ever since that disaster, one valuable lesson that your Petitioner has learnt is that never to be egoistic and not to treat things lightly.
I am glad to share that your Petitioner was offered a position in the firm following the completion of his pupillage for which your Petitioner is grateful.
[This would make a very promising start to his career in the legal field and this would definitely boost his confidence.]
Your Petitioner would through this special occasion, tell his parents, Mr. Chan Foo Keong and Madam Chew Mei Heng how grateful he is . His parents’ guidance, upbringing, the genuine love and the constant nagging made him what he is today.

Your Petitioner would like to thank his pupil mistress, Madam Shirley Loh Siew Lee for sharing her all knowledge without withholding any throughout his pupillage. He aspires to be as brilliant, sharp and successful lawyer as his pupil mistress one day.
Your Petitioner wishes to thank his colleagues at Siew Lee & Co Madam Lee, Catherine, Grace, Elaine, Khoo, Hema, Puvanes and Perryn for their guidance and for making his pupillage experience a great one.
My Lady, your Petitioner is aware that the legal profession is a challenging one.
[However, your Petitioner believes that by staying humble and striving hard and with the support of his learned friends and colleagues, his legal career will be a successful and fruitful one.]
Your Petitioner believes that he will be able to perform even better under pressure. Just like a diamond, a chunk of coal that did well under pressure.
Your Petitioner like Sir Winston Churchill, he once said:
“The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.”
My Lady, I believe that your Petitioner is a fit and proper person to be admitted and enrolled as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya, and that the papers are in order.
I also believe that my learned friends from all the relevant bodies have no objections to this Petition. Therefore, I humbly pray for an order in terms.
Court Order.
I crave leave from this Honourable Court to allow me to robe your Petitioner.
Much obliged, My Lady.
