My four-weeks attachment period was a valuable experience that gave me an insight of what legal world really is.\u00a0\u00a0 To add icing on the cake, I had the opportunity to experience mooting.<\/p>\n
Despite reading law for three years,\u00a0\u00a0 never have I\u00a0 imagined\u00a0 mooting\u00a0 off campus.\u00a0 Feeling\u00a0 nervous was an under statement due to the\u00a0 \u2018deficiencies\u2019 in skills\u00a0 experience and not to mention confidence.\u00a0\u00a0 Although I had the desire, never had the nerve to do it.<\/p>\n
The in-house moot training conducted in the firm was definitely a good learning experience\u00a0 in the preparation\u00a0 submission, court deportment,\u00a0 etiquette in a\u00a0 court and most importantly\u00a0\u00a0 the handling of the\u00a0 judges\u2019 questions.<\/p>\n
The experience\u00a0\u00a0 changed my mind about moot and prepared me\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to participate\u00a0 in moot competitions, it is never too late to try.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Besides the in-house moot training, we were given\u00a0 many research assignments.\u00a0\u00a0 We\u00a0\u00a0 learned much in Civil Procedure\u00a0\u00a0 like originating summon, writ of summon, notice of motion and summary judgment which were\u00a0\u00a0 alien\u00a0\u00a0 to me, now they all came alive.\u00a0 An important lesson\u00a0\u00a0 patience and hard work will always\u00a0 pay.<\/p>\n
Being in a firm very interested in Company Law brought me to the new frontiers in Company Law\u00a0 introduced by the Companies Bill 2015 as I was tasked to research into Corporate Voluntary Arrangements practised in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The court visits\u00a0 exposed\u00a0 us to\u00a0 how applications were\u00a0 made in\u00a0 court, addressing the judges and the senior assistant registrars and court\u00a0 etiquette.\u00a0 The Court of Appeal hearing which I observed\u00a0 was definitely an eye opener.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Simple tasks like making enquiries\u00a0 to the court or the ministry may look ridiculously facile.\u00a0 However, it taught me the much needed communication skills\u00a0\u00a0 to convey messages\u00a0\u00a0 effectively. Communication skills\u00a0 is one of\u00a0 the core skills that must be possessed by any law student and task like this will put one to the test.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Albeit the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 short\u00a0\u00a0 attachment, I\u00a0\u00a0 learned and gained much.\u00a0\u00a0 Special thanks to Mr. Alex Chang who had given me this opportunity\u00a0\u00a0 and also not to forget Miss Lim Soo Zee, Mr. Danien Soong, Ms. Janice and Ms. Chow who had help me a lot at the firm.
