Life is about experiencing and exploring.\u00a0 Alex Chang & Co is a great platform for anyone who is desperate to learn, explore and experience\u00a0 the\u00a0 legal profession, or even learning life lessons.<\/p>\n
Mr Alex Chang\u00a0 is\u00a0 a great master who has\u00a0 knowledge, practical skills\u00a0 and philosophy of life.\u00a0 He shared a story with\u00a0 me.<\/p>\n
It was about two employees from a shoes factory\u00a0 who were\u00a0 sent\u00a0 to Africa.\u00a0 One of the employees reported to his employer,\u00a0 saying there could be\u00a0 no market in Africa as everyone was bare footed.\u00a0 While the other employee reported that\u00a0 “I have found you a gold mine Boss!”.<\/p>\n
This story taught me that perspectives\u00a0 matter.\u00a0\u00a0 It is about how you perceive one matter, either positively or negatively.\u00a0 It is also about determination.\u00a0 If you are determined to be a successful person, you shall work towards that goal and never give excuses saying you cannot do this and that. One should never give up easily otherwise\u00a0\u00a0 your efforts\u00a0 will be wasted and you will\u00a0 regret for life.<\/p>\n
Working here, of course, is bittersweet.\u00a0 You will get\u00a0 reprimanded\u00a0 (of course), yet you know it is for your own\u00a0 benefit and for you to grow stronger.\u00a0\u00a0 Mr Alex Chang observes a\u00a0\u00a0 very high standard and he\u00a0 expects the same from all of us.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As a lawyer, you are expected to do an\u00a0 excellent job.\u00a0\u00a0 This is because of\u00a0 reliance the clients place on us.\u00a0\u00a0 Their properties\u00a0 are at stake.<\/p>\n
I found out that it is the Lawyers\u2019 duty\u00a0\u00a0 to go through\u00a0 all these hard work, preparing\u00a0 statement of claim,\u00a0 submission, questions for the\u00a0 witnesses,\u00a0\u00a0 grounds of\u00a0 appeal, to name but a few.\u00a0 It is not easy at all.\u00a0\u00a0 After my experience here\u00a0 in Alex Chang & Co, I\u00a0 have a much\u00a0 better insight on how all these are done,\u00a0 it requires time, brainstorming sessions,\u00a0 accumulated experience and foresight.<\/p>\n
Lawyers\u00a0 must equip themselves with great deal of\u00a0 knowledge,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 intelligence and also\u00a0 emotional\u00a0 intelligence commonly known as the \u201cEQ\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 To be a young\u00a0 lawyer,\u00a0 you must be humble and willing to learn,\u00a0\u00a0 when dealing with great lawyers, you shall be calm, arrange your thoughts, and express your mind\u00a0 clearly;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 behave and\u00a0 think like a lawyer.\u00a0\u00a0 You must also think critically,\u00a0 be curious about everything.<\/p>\n
I\u00a0 was given an opportunity to read one trial\u00a0 file.\u00a0\u00a0 While reading the facts, affidavits, bundle of authorities,\u00a0 common bundle of documents and so forth,\u00a0\u00a0 I discovered\u00a0 my\u00a0 weaknesses\u00a0 like language and\u00a0 reading speed.\u00a0\u00a0 I am a slow learner, but it\u00a0 should\u00a0 not stop me from becoming a great lawyer.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u00a0 had so much fun reading the transcripts,\u00a0 I\u00a0 found out that questions must be framed carefully and precisely.\u00a0 There are also \u201cdos\u201d and\u00a0 \u201cdon’ts\u201d\u00a0 during every stage of trial.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, working in Alex Chang & Co, you will be given many opportunities, like a visit to Palace of Justice to observe proceedings in the Apex Court,\u00a0 having conference\u00a0 with other lawyers\u00a0 and preparing submission.\u00a0 Working\u00a0 in this firm is not all about work,\u00a0 but also relationship.\u00a0\u00a0 There were many occasions where we had lunch\u00a0 with Mr Alex Chang and also fellow colleagues.\u00a0\u00a0 They will share about their stories related to legal profession, there is much to\u00a0\u00a0 to\u00a0 learn from these\u00a0 informal chats.\u00a0\u00a0 I would like to thanks everyone in this firm.<\/p>\n
Last but not least, life is full of surprises,\u00a0 if\u00a0 I\u00a0 had not undergone the mini pupillage program\u00a0 here, I\u00a0 would not have experienced all these.\u00a0\u00a0 Do not be\u00a0 afraid to step out from your comfort zone to try something new,\u00a0 you will never know what is awaiting you outside.\u00a0\u00a0 Everything happens for a reason.<\/p>\n
