Going to the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya was\u00a0 my favourite activity,\u00a0\u00a0 for \u00a0there were many discoveries \u00a0on every visit.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u00a0 had the opportunity to listen\u00a0 not only to Mr. Alex Chang\u2019s\u00a0 submission but also to his\u00a0 experience,\u00a0 jokes and kind advice, which were more than often thought provoking.\u00a0 I dare say, if you ask, he will answer.\u00a0\u00a0 Be willing to learn, and he will shower you with knowledge.<\/p>\n
Besides that, I also had the opportunity to listen to the legal submissions presented by many senior counsels\u00a0 and\u00a0 observe the responses of the\u00a0 judges.\u00a0 These to me, are very precious insights into the world of litigation\/ dispute resolution.\u00a0 In fact, on my first day of work itself,\u00a0 I was invited to the High Court and\u00a0 attended an argument in\u00a0 chambers. From this alone, I learnt\u00a0 that not every legal argument advanced will be accepted by the judge.\u00a0 For once,\u00a0 I\u00a0 feel\u00a0 as\u00a0 if I\u00a0 am one step closer to becoming a lawyer and presenting\u00a0 my cases before the judge.<\/p>\n
My second favourite activity would be the frequent sharing of meals with Mr Alex Chang\u00a0 and my fellow\u00a0 colleagues.\u00a0 For a very simple reason, that is, Mr Alex Chang\u00a0 always played\u00a0 host\u00a0 for our meals.\u00a0\u00a0 Everybody\u00a0 likes\u00a0 free meals.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sometimes we\u00a0 have a bite of\u00a0 pizza\u00a0 during\u00a0 a\u00a0 movie night\u00a0 at\u00a0 the office.\u00a0\u00a0 My farewell\u00a0 was\u00a0\u00a0 a dinner cum\u00a0 karaoke session after work hosted\u00a0 at the\u00a0 Royal Lake Club.<\/p>\n
Throughout my\u00a0 month long\u00a0 attachment\u00a0 at\u00a0 Alex Chang & Co,\u00a0 I\u00a0 have made another discovery to never take the\u00a0 shortcut out.\u00a0 When I was given the first file to read,\u00a0 I\u00a0 skipped straight to the written submission, mainly because I\u00a0 thought\u00a0 it was (and\u00a0 it\u00a0 still is),\u00a0\u00a0 one of the most interesting documents\u00a0 to read.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I quickly\u00a0 learnt that every document placed in the file is important; the affidavits, statement of claim, and the notes\u00a0 of proceedings containing the\u00a0 cross examination and so forth.\u00a0\u00a0 Mr Chang told me that one important\u00a0 aspect\u00a0\u00a0 of\u00a0 cross examination, is that,\u00a0 questions\u00a0 should only be asked if you know the answers\u00a0 to them.\u00a0\u00a0 However, until today, I have to admit that I remain a novice when it comes to reading files.<\/p>\n
My other tasks include, comparing the provisions in the new Companies Bill 2013<\/strong><\/em> with the existing\u00a0 Companies Act 1965<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 translation (as most of the documents are prepared in both English and Malay),\u00a0 proof reading,\u00a0\u00a0 preparing\u00a0 bundles of authorities and some simple legal works.\u00a0 I was also invited to observe an\u00a0 admission proceeding, the speeches were\u00a0 really inspiring.\u00a0\u00a0 It made me want to strive harder and go further.<\/p>\n Despite the long working hours and cold air conditioning, this will remain as one of the best working experience<\/em> I have had.
