Comments From our Former Assistant
I’m so glad that I have been chosen by Mr. Alex Chang to
join his firm as a legal assistant. For these nine (9)
months, I have learnt a lot from Mr Alex Chang.
He is willingly to spare time to teach me on court
procedures, general well being as a lawyer, negotiation
skills, although he is busy attending to clients, court,
seminars and Rotary Club meetings.
I have an option to improve myself either by way of
researching for the solution for every legal problem or he
can give me the answers straight away.
No guess work is allowed here. Every solution must be
supported by the relevant Acts, Rules and/ or civil
procedure text books. He trains me to be well
prepared, simulating presentations before the Learned
Judges. I find that once we are well prepared, it really
improves our presentations in court.
As an assistant, I handle some hearings, attending to
negotiations for settlement on my own. Besides, I also
have the opportunities to assist my boss in court.
Through the latter, I have gained the insight on the
proper decorum in court, communication skills with our
learned friends and clients.
On the whole, it has been and will be, a fun filled
experience watching senior lawyers arguing complex
legal issues on injunctions, winding up, appointment of
liquidators, bankruptcy, corporate restructuring, security
for costs and last but not least, civil trials where we get to
‘cross’ the witnesses using opening statements like:
“Do you know, if you do not tell the truth, it will be a
contempt of court...”
